I watched CNN, BBC News, CNN and Fox News the other night and although I saw a few Asian female faces, I did not see a single Asian male face and that made me wonder, where are the Asian men in broacasting?
A little research turned up a survey, which found that Asian Americans made up only 2.7 percent of the television news workforce in 2003 - and this constituted a drop from 3.1 in 2002, and an even greater drop from 4.1 percent in 2001. Asian males however, make up only 1%.
Another study by the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California found a nearly 5-to-1 ratio of Asian American women to Asian American men in the top 25 markets.
So, where are the Asian men?
News directors claim it is due to a small applicant pool, but Asian males claim it is an issue of stereotyping and simple lack of opportunity.
The Asian American Journalists Association is a non-profit professional and educational organization with more than 2,000 members. Founded in 1981, its mission is to encourage Asian Americans to enter the ranks of journalism, to work for fair and accurate coverage of Asian
Americans, and to increase the number of Asian American journalists and news managers in the industry. In 2004, AAJA distributed a DVD highlighting over 60 Asian male news, sports and weather reporters in the hopes of inspiring more young Asian American men to enter broadcast journalism and at the same time, directors to hire more Asian men.
I, for one, think it would be nice to see some fresh faces for a change.
