The last time Mariah Carey received a batch of Grammy nominations, she experienced one of the most humiliating experiences of her career as she was outvoted all six times. As a world-wide television audience watched, her mood darkened with each loss.
Eight Grammy nominations are just within her grasp this year and she is the only person nominated in all three key categories of record, album and song of the year. Fans and music industry representatives are confident that she will have a more enjoyable time at this year's event.
Although Mariah has won only two Grammys to date, she is the only singer to score more #1 hits than Elvis Presley or the Beatles.
But sometimes, an artist's chance for a Grammy can be swayed by the familiarity that the 12,000 voters in the music industry have with her background. Four years ago, Mariah was a music industry pariah. She had suffered a breakdown, released a flop album, starred in a flop of a movie, and was dumped by her label.
And yet, Mariah's eighth studio album - "The Emancipation of Mimi" - was the biggest release of the year. U.S. sales have already been logged at 5.2 million. A hit single off this album, "We Belong Together," topped the U.S. singles chart for 14 weeks and many believe it should win song of the year, a songwriter's award.
Watch the Grammy's on February 8th.
